Color is at the center of virtually all of my work. It is exciting to watch pigment dance and blend in the water. I can spend hours mixing colors and creating color charts. I love houses so I photograph those that have seen better days and paint them in new surroundings, giving them a new life. I try to capture the beauty of the landscape of the American Midwest and the charm of smalltown life, but once in a while I can’t resist the beauty of the old Mediterranean villages. I most often paint in realism using the colors of both real life and my fantasy. I paint the world as I wish it to be because after all it is Cris’ world and I get to make up the rules.

As a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Hiram College I hold a Bachelor’s degree in History. While I am largely self-taught, I have attended workshops with Pat Wynn in Fort Madison, Iowa, and Roberta Rogers at the Tubac School of Fine Art in Arizona. However, my greatest influence was my father who was an illustrator and cartoonist. His lessons on perspective and architecture stay with me to this day.

Watercolors . . . everyone’s journey is different because everyone’s life is different, but everything you do in life affects that journey. This is my art journey. I doodled. I drew flowers. I learned calligraphy. I painted “One Stroke” flowers everywhere, and those One Stroke flowers gave me the courage to try other things. I bought a book on painting birds in oils and tried it. That began a new adventure. I couldn’t get enough. I bought more books on art. I took a few classes and workshops. I painted everything from flowers to my laundry room walls. And then one day I realized that I just could no longer handle the strong odors of the solvents in oils.
So my journey took me to watercolors and a whole new adventure in art. There were new things to learn. Drawing became imperative, and I had to learn the patience of practice. I have loved every minute of this journey and all of its challenges. I’ve had to learn many things, but most of all I had to learn to allow myself to fail and to succeed with my paintings.
